There was a post about this already, but it was lost in the annuls of time..or when the forum got wiped.

Anyways, as you may/may not know, we're going to be holding a mini-meetup on Saturday 2nd October at the Eurogamer Expo, which is being held this year at Earls Court, London.

Now, if you want to go and haven't bought tickets, I got bad news for you - the Saturday's sold out. However, there's nothing stopping you from using this thread to organise a meetup for the Friday or the Sunday.

I'd also spoken about the possibility of merging this meetup with one that GamingUnion.net were holding. I'll need to talk to Darryl (GU owner) about this to see if it's still happening, but at the moment I think it might just be us lot.

So, who's actually going? Post in here, and we'll start looking at making plans.

If you can't make it to EGE (as I'm going to call it now), fear not. I'm gonna get some hands on time with Vanquish, as well as any other SEGA games that happen to be there, and publish previews on the site afterwards. There'll be pictures as well.

I've played the Beta version of this game a while ago... I must say it was really depressing to me. The game like all has its ups and downs.
Heres a quick summary to its ups and downs:
Pros:
- Graphic improvements (compared to earlier versions of the game)
- Multi player battles

Cons:
- Sucks if you have never played any starcraft
- Long story short: No easy activating tutorial so almost all newbies get screwed
- not so easy telling whose on your side

well thats pretty much all i have to say, i give the game 2 out of 5 stars :(

Notes:
if you do not know how to play starcraft i would not recommend wasting money to buy this game
- played it bc got the beta version ;) for free now i know not to waste money on the game itself
however if you are a Starcraft fan and KNOW the controls you would like it better than I did

This is a Sega site so everyone knows that Sega Rally was one of the best games ever, Sega Rally 2 was alright until MSR turned up and then there was...

This is a Sega site so everyone knows that Sega Rally was one of the best games ever, Sega Rally 2 was alright until MSR turned up and then there was an obscure Japanese and PS2 only release of a 3rd game complete with a remake of the original that I think actually has windows in the cars instead of grids like on the Saturn version because that couldn't do transparencies.

This game is made by an English company. That's what happens these days, Japanese developers throw money at some middle sized team from western Europe and get them to make the bloody game themselves because us ungrateful westerners obviously don't appreciate their oriental talents and if Sega made it themselves it would just be pearl before swine. I think the company is called Sega Racing Studios. Sega liked them so much they named them after themselves then fired everyone a few months after this game was released.

The gameplay is similar to the old games, so not realistic at all. The handling has a whiff of it's predecessors and it has all those same situations such as a jungle, a desert, a muddy place where a load of birds fly out of the way just before you hit them and lakeside. Same cars as well; I think all 3 of the original's are here, as well as the ones you expect and are in every race game (yes, I mean a suburu with gold wheel trims and that red mitzazda or whatever it is). When you first have a go it feels a bit wild, the steering is all over the place and you hit the sides of the track all the time. I didn't like this either but if you go the cockpit camera all is well again. The handling grows on you; you need to get used to the way it's as if your car turns on a point going through the middle of it, there's not much of a feeling of wieght of grip at all.

There's no damage to the cars, which is fair enough as it's an arcade game, yet they decided you should be able to damage the track itself. There's apparently a technology at work here that makes your car change the very surface under its wheels as you race. In practise this means everytime you go round the track the dirt will have slightly shifted if you took a dodgy line through a hairpin. I think you go faster following the tracks and have more grip in the untouched mud, possibly. It doesn’t make that much of a difference.

It's really fast and action packed. The graphics are great and the music is rockin'. Blasting through the mud in your cockpit camera angle, there is a great sense of competition as you have to smash your way past all the other cars, dirt splashing up, dust bellowing out of every vehicle and that might have even been a guitar solo you just heard fizzing away under the kettle-like whine of your car's engine. It weaves a nice illusion of the chaos of a rally. And that's what it is, because rallying is supposed to be dangerous right? The last 2 British champions are both dead now, and yeah I know they didn't die in crashes, but it still shows the kind of crazy person on the edge of existence that would ever consider doing this sport in reality. This game doesn't ever get really dangerous. As well as no damage, there are invisible barriers everywhere that bounce you back without your co-driver so much as screaming for his life. I'd like to see a harsher punishment for bad driving, perhaps not a couple of stiffs in a burnt-out wreck, but at least a flat tyre. It reminds me of this story my mate at the pub told me of a woman who swam the Atlantic. I didn't believe it, and I was right. She didn't just dive off Land's End in a speedo swimsuit and emerge off the coast of Boston a couple of weeks later, she swam it in some tank stuck to a boat over a few months. May as well have not bothered then! I've probably swam the Atlantic if you add up all my hellish junior school swimming lessons (or at least it felt like it). That's what this game feels like, rallying in a bathtub. Those Hippos over the other side of the barrier will never eat you no matter how much you play.

Not many modes here because it's a pretend arcade game (a coin-op version wasn't released until the carcass of Sega Rally 360 was a couple of years stale): championship, time trial, race and multiplayer. Multiplayer is alright, time trial is boring, a race is just a race, same as with every racing game - so onto the championship mode. In that you race in sets of three tracks and have to score points, such as 10 for a win, 8 for second etc. Everyone starts together for once and you aren't chasing cars down alone, it's a straight race this time. It doesn't matter if you win the 3 race tournament overall because you are hoarding points for the big world championship 4 RACE TOURNAMENT!!! If you win that you go onto the next car class, there are three of them, win all of them and you get to Lakeside. Win that and you've probably won the game. I don't know for sure because I haven't beaten it. And that is the game's biggest problem: it's too bloody hard.

At the start it's alright, a bit of a challenge but you get enough points to squeeze into the next round often enough. Soon though the races get so hard and you need so many points it becomes stupidly difficult. The other cars simply disappear into the distance and no matter what you do you can't catch them. You take good lines through the corners but they are still toasting you. And I'm good at the first two games - I won the Stratos and everything! So it's like most arcade games: wooed by the simplicity at first, then forcible ejected for the slightest mistake. A bit like being a woman in a James Cagney film I'd imagine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXiRcUNn64o). I just don't know what this game wants from me anymore. And I'm old school, if I can't take this kind of severity how will people who watch films like Scot Pilgrim cope?

So it's really hard, almost on rails and light on content. But it isn't crap. No, because there is nothing else like it on modern consoles. Even games which like to think they are a bit arcadey, like Ridge Racer 6 or PGR, aren't as single minded as this game. It's about jumping into a car and winning. No messing about with customisation, or tweaking the wheel pressure, or buying a better car. If you don't win it's because you were too crap. And the only way to get good is with skill.

So, to summarise, I give this game:

Nigel Mansell/10

Most people will think it's a bit old fashioned and boring; some people will think it's a class act.

Sorry if this review was crap, it was done in haste as much as jest.

I know it sounds redundant, but here's the point of this thread.

Should Saturday Night SEGA get 50 listeners TONIGHT (10pm UK time, tell your friends), next week's show will be the third ever Saturday Night Special, meaning three hours of fun and games. Only this time, there won't be one theme...there'll be three.

Oh, and you get to choose.

There's 9 options in the poll above, but don't feel you're confined to those, they're just the popular ones. If you have another suggestion, click Other and tell me in a post which one you're going for. I'll log them in a notepad file.

The top three will be chosen. The third most popular will air first from 9-10, the second most popular will air from 10-11, and the most popular will air from 11-12.

I'm starting the poll now because next week's show will be pre-recorded, so I need to know by WEDNESDAY!

Have fun, and good luck! The nature of next week's show rests on your shoulders!

Incase you didn't know there is more and more controversy in the news and press about this game as in the Multiplayer you can play on the terrorists side and as such shoot US soldiers. There was an MP over in in Britain calling for it to be banned as it unbritish (even thoughthere aren't any british soldiers in the game) and now the game has been banned from being sold in or near any military bases in the US. What do you think about this? Is it just a game? or is there a line that shouldn't be crossed and having a game where you shoot US soldiers in a conflict which is going on now is crossing it?

I've been playing it a lot lately, so figured I could write about it

Fable 2

What I enjoy most about Role Playing Games is the ability to actually role play a character within a fantasy world. Western RPG’s can be more fun in this respect as many give you the choice to create and shape your own character, allowing you to scope your own imagination to whatever limit the game world imposes on you. This is why games like The Elder Scrolls and the Fable series draw me back in time and time again. Each new game is a different character, a different world.

My recent Fable 2 addiction then has lead to a few new characters and worlds. In one, I started as an evil gun-toting assassin that ended up as a woman by the end of the game. My second character was an obese holy man that was also too lazy to use a sword, but who wanted to do right by the world, despite how tiring it was. The third was a sword wielding family man that accidentally gave freshly picked flowers to the bloke standing next to his wife, leading to a quick divorce and issues relating to his own sexuality.

I am a big fan of the Fable series and they certainly continue to grow. The world is much bigger than the original Xbox classic, instead of a HUD we are guided by man’s best friend that accompanies you everywhere, able to be trained in fighting and treasure hunting. Instead of bows we now have pistols, rifles and blunderbusses and a few other changes.. But at the heart of the world of Albion is the same British humour and charm, weaved across an epic Robin Hood style aesthetic as you travel across a variety of lands, defeating bandits, balverines and hobbes and you can still woo men and women alike with a series of different expressions, ranging from flirting to farting.

The ‘good vs evil’ choices are back, which also affect the appearance of your hero as well as the reaction of NPC’s around you. However, we also have a new alignment between ‘purity’ and ‘corruption’ which is affected by the foods you eat and your general greediness. The morality options may have seemed somewhat clichéd in the first game, but they’ve been tweaked here and include choices with real consequences, some of which cause you to stop and think.

The combat is more or less the same, but has been simplified somewhat in order to attract a more casual audience. Melee, ranged and magic attacks are mapped to a button each and skills can be learnt by gathering related experience. There were some criticisms about the simplicity of the single button combat, but I honestly never felt put off with it and liked mixing up short and long range attacks. I especially enjoyed the sub-targeting option for long range weapons.

The difficulty curve has also been reduced, and this is perhaps the crucial difference between the two Fable games. In the first, all damage your character took was converted into scars and being defeated resulted in retries. In the sequel, if you are defeated, you lose experience and become scarred; however the Knothole download content offers ways to remove scarring, meaning that not even this is a punishment in itself. Players can pick up from where they left off when beaten and it is debatable whether this is a better way to handle failure over a blank game over screen or not.

Personally speaking, the only thing from the original Fable that I missed in its successor was the exp bonuses for chaining attacks and also the boast challenges which allowed you to set your own difficulty level for quests. I would love to see that return again.

The ending of the game also received some criticism. Firstly, the end itself is somewhat anti-climatic. Secondly, your dog remains an important gameplay mechanism throughout, yet at the end you are forced to make a choice which could include losing your faithful companion. Some gamers failed to recognise the ramifications of such a choice and what it meant within the game, thus the option became available within the Knothole DLC to return your dog back to you.

The DLC by the way is a welcome addition and comes in two packages: Knothole Island introduces a whole new town and three additional dungeons. Here there are new clothes, weapons and special items which can alter the physical appearance of your hero as well as the aforementioned dog replacement. The second, See the Future, is split between two quests, a preview of Albion’s future within the third Fable game, and an added coliseum where you can fight for points and glory. This also adds extra items and also achievements, both DLC are fun and add more to the Fable world.

It is credit to the Fable games that I continue to play them so much. Fable has grown, perhaps in directions that the hardcore gamers may not always appreciate, but it still remains a fun game which looks at RPG’s in a more light hearted way. The third game in the series is due out later this year and will be growing in even stranger directions, with the promise of a darker Charles Dickens inspired world and strategic elements thrown in the mix. I’m excited to see where it will go and know I’ll probably be playing that one for months to come as well.

The first game by Denmark based studio Playdead Is stunning to look at, to play and to finish. Limbo is a 2D puzzler but it may come as a shock to find that it isn't that puzzling. From simple 'push a crate here' to full-blown Physics (push a crate here, reverse gravity and turn the electric on) the puzzles are rarely repeated and seem logical and fun to solve. It's not until near end where you stop and think, "crap, I'm stuck" and that time will come sooner than most will hope for.

Limbo's beginning is probably the highlight of the entire game however as the forest in which you wake is the most interesting and atmospheric setting in the whole game. Tree's and strange buildings become visible through the mist; strange tribes and creatures try to foil you at every turn. Some RPG's would struggle to create such sense of place within such a short amount of time.

The style is moody, using German Expressionist styles in glorious HD to paint an Interesting and Immersive world. Despite being almost abstract the world in which you play in is completely released and believable. There are three ‘levels’ that blend seamlessly into one another, and it really feels like you’re on a journey. The levels do not increase in difficulty in a conventional way (there are not more bad guys or less life) the puzzles get more intricate and greater in length.

The boy you control, despite being void of all detail is well animated and believable. He is a lonely silhouette with two piercing, blinking white eyes. His movements are incredibly childlike, shifting his weight whilst running down hill and raising his arms to potential movable objects. This is a great design aspect as it lets the player know what is interactive and what is not. You want to take care of him, right up to the point where is head is brutally departed from his body by a bear-trap. Do you feel sorry for the decapitated boy? No. Because the act of his death will normally show you a solution to the problem laid before you! That and the fact the check pointing in this game makes you hardly ever shout out "What, I have to do THAT again"

The sound design, like its monochrome palate is minimalist, with only a few powerful discords to punctuate certain sights or events. However the sound effects used are brilliant, and add real depth to the beautifully crafted, yet morbid world. Not that the morbidity will stop you from laughing at the recently deiced boy and the various parts of him falling away from your mistimed jump.

Some of the puzzles in Limbo are immediately apparent but take platforming skill to solve. Factors such as trajectory, timing and speed are used to great effect setting the game apart from such titles 'Professor Layton And The Curious Village'. Due to this platforming element of this game the player is drawn into the game rather than feeling stranded on the other side of the screen as some other popular point and click puzzlers can do.

It’s hard to write a review about a game you’re in love with, so I’ll stop here before the love juices flow. Lets just end on:
If I were trapped in Limbo I wouldn't mind one bit, apart from the constant death and mind maggots.

Sonic Adventure has just been dated on Xbox Live Arcade for the 15th September and the price will be 800 MS Points. No news on the PSN release or price though.

I don't think 800 points is too bad, actually, and if other Dreamcast re-releases are at this price, then they're pretty good value!

I'm not sure if I'll buy it though, since I have the original and DX versions.

Anyone interested in getting it?

In these times of economic struggle the Chancellor of the Ex-Box-er (See what I did there? With puns that good I could work for The Sun!) have decided that the annual (Or monthly if you do it that way) Xbox tax (Also know as the Xbox Live Gold Subscription) is going up come this November.

Considering that all of Microsoft's rivals (Steam, Nintendo, Playstation) all offer free online gaming and matchmaking do you feel this is a step in the right direction or even worth paying (even) more for? Discuss!
